Week 8 Literature Review

This was my first time writing a literature review and it was definitely more challenging than I expected it to be. I had a difficult time writing a review that didn't sound like a summarization. Once I had a better understanding of how to write it, I was pleased with my finished paper. Writing the literature review really helped me see the similarities and differences of the journals and articles I had selected. This process really helped me have a better understanding of what I was reading. The way I conduct my research has been positively affected by this process. In the future, I will be more mindful and selective of the sources I select for my research. There are a few unanswered questions about my research question, the importance of integrating visual arts into the curriculum. I came across a paper written by John M. Eger in 2015 titled CALIFORNIA IN THE CREATIVE ECONOMY. Eger states that the recent implementation of the Common Core, driven by arts integration, will help foster creativity and new ways of thinking. I was unaware that the common core focused on art integration. After a few more years I would like to see more research and statistical evidence of the results of the Common Core implementation.
Best of luck to everyone!

Week 7

This week's assignment really helped me develop a more well-rounded understanding of my research question. By using three of my previously found sources and searching for three new sources using google scholar I was able to find great information. With the use of the evaluation criteria provided by the CRAAP Test, I determined that the authors of the papers and articles I selected were credible and brought up some points that I had not considered before. They all provide a great amount of facts and evidence that support the importance of integrating the arts into the curriculum for students of all ages. A point that I came across in my research is that the implementation of the Common Core, driven by arts integration, will help foster creativity and new ways of thinking. I believe this topic will be interesting to a wide audience because there are many people who are against the Common Core State Standards Initiative. With the help of the new initiatives the arts will no longer be an option but a seamless integration.

The Importance of Integrating Visual Arts into Curriculum
Eckhoff, A. (2008). The importance of art viewing experiences in early childhood visual arts:
the exploration of a master art teacher’s strategies for meaningful early arts
experiences. Early Childhood Education Journal, 35(5), 463-472. doi:10.1007/s10643-
          007-0216-1
The author Angela Eckhoff is a professor of Teaching and Learning in the Early Childhood Education Program. In this article, a museum-based arts education program for young children was studied. The students were between the ages of four and five and their interactions with the visual arts were explored. The students learned about and made their own works of art in the classroom. The teachers were responsible for engaging and motivating the children to participate in an art-based dialog. After reading the article I learned about the four main teaching strategies that the program's master teachers used to introduce and develop class conversations about artworks. I also learned about the different methods for introducing students to the artistic and aesthetic elements of artworks.

John, M. (2015). CALIFORNIA IN THE CREATIVE ECONOMY.
This paper was written by John M. Eger, an author and lecturer on the subjects of creativity and innovation, in 2015. Eger focuses on the point that art is crucial in schools in order to help students be more creative and innovative which in turn will help them be better prepared for higher paying jobs. He focuses on the demand for creative and innovative minds in the changing workforce. The author also states how the implementation of the common core has brought about new ways of teaching that help foster creativity driven by arts integration. I found this paper very interesting because it brought up many new and interesting points.

Lynch, P. (2007). Making meaning many ways: an exploratory look at integrating the arts                               with classroom curriculum. Art Education, 60(4), 33-38. Retrieved from https://eds-b-                         ebscohost.com
Patricia Lynch is a Fine Arts teacher and artist. In this article, the author Patricia Lynch’s studies explored the ways that the different arts were integrated in the classroom. The study took place at the Arts Academy, an urban K-5 magnet school located in the southeastern United States.  Third, fourth, and fifth-grade students were observed over a 4-week period as they engaged in arts integrations. The study provided evidence that integrating the arts with classroom curriculum consistently supported all kinds of learners. This article supported the fact that the arts integration is very important and an amazing teaching tool. It not only enhances learning but helps students learn things that are difficult for them. This article helped me see that it is very beneficial to all students to have an art-integrated curriculum but it will also be a challenge to plan a good integration.

Nompula, Yolisa. (2012). An investigation of strategies for integrated learning experiences and
instruction in the teaching of creative art subjects. South African Journal of
             Education32(3), 293-306. Retrieved from

             01002012000300006&lng=en&tlng=en.
In this article the author Yolisa Nompula, a professor of language and arts, conducted a qualitative research study on the integration of visual arts in order to optimize the limited allocated time to teach practical subjects. The research was conducted in South Africa on students grade 7-9. With the use of documentary analysis, teacher interviews and learner group discussions based on semi-structured, open-ended questions data was collected to show the benefits of integrating visual arts in a teaching lesson. The data collected showed percentages describing what teaching methods worked best for the students and why. I found this article very helpful because it gave insight to the different teaching methods and why students like the methods they preferred. I also found that teachers struggle with the same issue of the lack of an adequate learning environment.

Ruppert, S. S. (2006). Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement. National
Assembly of State Arts Agencies. 1029 Vermont Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20005.
The publication written by Sandra S. Ruppert, a director of the Arts Education Partnership, provides compelling research on the value of arts education. The author provides statistical facts on how students who were taught with an art-integrated curriculum performed better in standardized tests. Another point made by Ruppert that I found intriguing was that high school students who took more art classes had higher math and verbal SAT scores.

Urbanski, A. J. (2012). The Importance of Arts Education and Not Leaving a Child Behind.

The paper written by Amanda Urbanski touches on a lot of the same points and concerns about art integration that I have. Focusing on the No Child Left Behind act, Urbanski points out the sad reality that even though it has been proven that the arts integration helps close the education gap it is still seen as an option and not a requirement by many school districts. When it comes to budget cuts the first programs to go are the art programs. The author cites a lot of great sources and information while providing good insight on the topic.

Week 6

I have always understood how important it is to ensure academic integrity when completing any assignment. This week's readings definitely reinforced that and clarified some things about plagiarism that I was a bit unsure of. The video "Avoiding Plagiarism: What Do I Need to Cite" was great in reminding me that ideas should also be cited. Although it is common knowledge, as stated in the video, it is very easy to overlook when one is caught up writing a paper. After completing the reading "What is Creative Commons" I became aware of the Creative Commons organization. I had never heard of this great copyright modification tool before. I feel it is a great idea to enable the copyright holders to decide how much they allow their work to be used. All of the readings and videos have been great reminders of the importance of citing other people’s works and of the severity of the offense when not done when needed.

Week 5

This week’s assignment consisted of finding a Peer Reviewed Empirical Research Article. Before this week, I had never heard of that term so I was a little uneasy beginning the assignment but was surprisingly pleased with my result. With the use of the ERIC (EBSCO) database, I was able to find a great article supporting my research topic, "The Importance of Integrating Visual Arts into Curriculum." This article supported the fact that the arts integration is very important and an amazing teaching tool. It not only enhances learning but helps students learn things that are difficult for them. My eyes were opened to the fact that due to the way the education system is set up schools have to define their curriculum in terms of language. Therefore, greatly limiting the integration of visual arts as a form of showing what a student has learned. The challenge of planning a good Visual Arts integration has led me to want to research different online lesson plans to help me better understand how to teach an effective, engaging, and fully-integrated lesson.

Week 4

The research conducted this week through Academic Search Premier yielded a lot of great information on my research topic, "The Importance of Integrating Visual Arts into Curriculum." I was unaware that this database was available through Leatherby Libraries' website. By searching "the importance of art when teaching" and limiting the results to Scholarly (peer reviewed) Journals, articles in the English language and in PDF full text I was able to find a great article; The Importance of Art Viewing Experiences in Early Childhood Visual Arts: The Exploration of a Master Art Teacher’s Strategies for Meaningful Early Arts Experiences written by Angela Eckhoff. The author followed teachers who are considered master art teachers by the Denver Art Museum during a museum-based arts education program for young children. When reading the article, I came across a lot of great information. I learned about the four main teaching strategies that the program's master teachers used to introduce and develop class conversations about artworks: game-play, questioning, storytelling, and technically focused talk. These teaching strategies made for a successful program and a fully engaged class. As I continue researching my topic I hope to learn all the different techniques and tools teachers use to teach art in their classrooms so that way I can feel more confident when teaching it myself. I believe that the use of visual arts activities can enhance any lesson and allows the students to express themselves in their own way without the fear of being "wrong".

Introduction

Hello! My name is Mayra Ochoa Paz, I am a Liberal Studies major and this is my second session at Brandman University. I am pursuing a Bachelor’s degree and then I plan on continuing on to the credential program so I can teach second grade. I have worked with severely handicapped children for over ten years and I absolutely love it.
I believe that as a teacher you are constantly learning, whether it’s finding ways to manage different behaviors or coming up with fun ways to teach a lesson. I would like to research different techniques and teacher experiences so I can always have tools to use when needed. After completing the reading for this week, I became more aware of how much I have to learn when it comes to research. I have been out of school for ten years so I have a lot to learn. I would really like to learn how to become a more effective researcher and how to navigate the online libraries. I am looking forward to becoming a better researcher!
